Having Breakfast in Shower. #Showereats

Having breakfast in the shower seems like an odd behavior to many people, but since the September tweet of 7th Heaven starlet, Jessica Biel, daring readers to “try it”, Twitter has been taken by storm with the movement #ShowerEats. One writer from extracrispy.com even went so far as to do a vegetarian replication of the tweet. While the coffee part went over superbly, it turns out having an actual plated breakfast can be quite tricky for many mere mortals. From that came a thought. Here in America, where breakfast is often skipped in the morning in many ways due to time constraints, how could it be easier to enjoy these multitasking moments of solitude to the fullest?

The first thought that occurred is the likelihood of difference between the showers of a starlet and a food blogger. The photo posted by Miss Biel looks luxurious, her breakfast of a plate of chicken and apple sausage with an espresso seemingly untouched by the shower and with even a small plate under her drink, giving it a very put together appearance. Writer Maxine Builder’s experience looks vastly different. In this bathroom, her coffee mug balances on an edge, a place to hopefully keep it from becoming full of bath product. Her vegetarian breakfast sausage has no place for the plate to perch, and though it is a well thought out experiment, seems like there is no place to shield the nutritious food from the soapy elements. Though the shower coffee was a success, the writer’s breakfast in this case was rendered disgusting, and without the single agonizing swallow, completely inedible.

In the end, the challenge was publicly fulfilled and many are continuing to ponder the idea. If it is possible to have an actually edible meal in the shower, why not make it a place of contemplation and nourishment? Two things that are said to often make any day better is getting clean and having a good meal. It seems that if done properly, this is a win-win: a little retreat where everyone from a starlet to an average person can come out both squeaky clean and with a full stomach. In our fast-paced everyday, it seems like something that should be given a chance.

Now, soggy sausage in hot steam….not all would find that particularly appetizing. Some people, like Extra Crispy writer Maxine Builder’s friend admit to shower eating, but only granola bars. To each their own. Some other ideas for people without a large space or enough time to prepare breakfast might include a breakfast smoothie with a lid and straw, other crunchy fast paced foods, or even a well covered toaster pastry. In college, there were many alleged hangover cures in constant conversation circulation. I found that my best bet was not a whole meal in the shower, but as much cold electrolyte drink as I could muster and then a coffee in a very hot shower before attempting to go to class or consume anything seemed to do the trick.

Humorous Food & Shower planning:

Another option for those that want to make breakfast in the shower a regular immersion into their own temporary getaway would be to mold their bathroom around their habits. People that cohabitate, stay at home parents, and busy career-folk might fit into this category. I thought long and hard about alternatives, but for most it would not be worthwhile inventing and producing items specifically to keep shower meals dry and out of the water stream. If you are planning on a bathroom remodel anyway, a few tips to make it shower eats ready might assist in the planning process:

  1. If you are planning on acquiring a new bathtub, one with enough surface area on the corners can help you have places to set that beloved morning coffee or smoothie. Though hot water is pleasant to bathe in, sudden scalding coffee tipping over onto your feet seems unpleasant enough to make a point in avoiding.

  2. If your budget allows and you are in the process of installing a shower only, invest in a shower that makes you feel posh. Some amazing showers have benches built in and turn into steam rooms, but if you are going a bit more basic, try to get a shower with enough surface area to comfortably set down at least a mug, but a plate as well on those days you are feeling adventurous.

  3. A nice shower head can make a lot of difference in your experience. At the very least, invest in a showerhead that adjusts well, if not simply for the sake of comfort, for the sake of your breakfast so the water can be pointed as far away from your nourishment as possible.

  4. One less expensive, but awesome change you can make to your bathing area is to acquire some sort of waterproof radio (which can be found for under thirty dollars on several shopping sites) or if you are springing for it, getting sound installed in the restroom so that you can jam out and get pumped for your day.

  5. No room for a larger shower or bath? If you are working with a limited space in the actual room, see if you can get your toilet as far from your shower as possible. Even those with a sparkling restroom can be put off by their food if the only place to store their coffee is on or inches from their toilet.

  6. If it is not possible to do a remodel and you are simply looking to make your bathroom more pleasant all around, the number one step is keep it clean. There is nothing nice or calming about a room that causes discomfort or disgust. Do a good clean, maybe get some fluffy towels, keep your favorite products stocked, and have a soft mat to step out on. Even the little things can make a difference in your morning shower eats experience.

I am optimistic that this article provided at least an overview of the #ShowerEats trend, and for those who remain loyal to this practice, a few tips to make your soapy morning nosh even more enjoyable. Here in Denver, after a very good clean of my shared bathroom, I plan to give it a proper chance. Aside from being a great place for alone time, the bathing area is hopefully a part of everyone’s day, so for all of those busy people out there I say give shower eats a chance. You might be pleasantly surprised.
